I took the bus home...

Jan. 19th, 2012 | 11:28 am

because I sold my car! I'm relieved to have the cash in the bank and an empty garage but saying goodbye to a car is always hard. The CarMax guy asked me if I had anything left in it and I lied and told him that I wanted to check. I really just wanted to say goodbye one more time. I kissed the steering wheel several times. That's probably weird but I would have felt really bad if I was all, 'Okay bye, thanks.' and just walked away. This was my third car, the first one that I got as an adult with a real job.My first two were hand me downs that cost a couple thousand dollars, tops.  It was bumpy, loud, cool and super fun to drive. The soft top windows were a total pain to put in so I left it open all the time and somehow it didn't get drenched in the (infrequent) rain; just a little damp. I drove it from LA to Seattle alone with my dog. It was the perfect car to drive up the coast and through the redwoods in, even though the wind in Oregon almost ripped the top off and I literally had to hold it on with my hand freezing off for about five hours straight. You couldn't talk in it if you were on the freeway (too loud) but there was nothing better than driving it around with the top off on nice days. It always had a bumper sticker on it, the last one being a 'No on hate, No on 8' one in response to the proposition in California to keep gay marriage from becoming legal. I enjoy a good bumper sticker, but I like to keep it classy. Just one and always carefully placed. Of course I scratched the hell out of the paint trying to get it off but they didn't ding me so that's good. I totally get why people get midlife crisis cars, they are fun! My next car will probably be quite sensible since I think I'll be living in a rainier climate and I'd like to be able to have a conversation in my vehicle. It would also be nice to not have people walk by and just lift things out of the back of it. Goodbye new toaster, it would have been nice to know you. I never named it, which is very unlike me. We just called it 'the Jeep' but that seemed good enough, It was a big part of my life and I hope the next person who drives it enjoys it as much as I did.  82,000 miles and going strong!
